That gives you a four-day weekend from Thursday, September 3 through Monday, September 7, and Fort Myers Beach is one of the easiest places in Southwest Florida to spend it. Rates drop after the summer peak, the beach is wide open compared to March, and the Gulf is still bathwater warm.

Busy, but manageable. Labor Day is the last real push of the summer season before things go quiet through September and October. You will notice it on Estero Boulevard between about 11am and 3pm and in the Times Square area at sunset.

What that means practically: beach access parking lots fill by mid-morning on Saturday and Sunday, and street parking on Estero is limited and metered. Plan around it rather than fighting it.

Estero Boulevard is a single road running the length of the island, so every car is in the same place at the same time. Most people who visit more than once stop driving on the island entirely.

The options that actually work:

Golf carts. Four and six-seat carts hold the family, the cooler, and the beach chairs. Easy to park where a car will not fit. Best pick if you have kids or you are staying midisland and want to reach Times Square without moving your car.

Scooters and Vespas. Two people, no parking problem, and genuinely fun on the north end. If you have never ridden one, the island is a soft place to learn at 25 mph.

Beach cruisers. The only thing you can rent that you can actually ride on the beach. Golf carts and scooters stay on the road. A cruiser goes down onto the hard-packed sand near the waterline and you can ride the shoreline as far as you want. Fat balloon tires, one speed, coaster brakes, no gears to think about. If the picture in your head of Fort Myers Beach involves riding along the water at low tide, this is the rental that does it.

E-bikes. For covering the length of the island without earning it. Estero Boulevard runs about seven miles end to end, and in September heat that is a long pedal. An e-bike turns the whole island into an easy ride, which makes it the pick for getting from a midisland rental up to Times Square and back.

Beach wheelchairs and the e-Beach Wagon. Balloon-tire chairs roll over soft sand where a standard chair sinks. The e-Beach Wagon hauls up to 350 pounds of gear and converts to a bench or a table once you get there.

Friday: get on the island and slow down

Cross the Matanzas Pass Bridge, drop your bags, and pick up your cart or scooter early so you are not driving for the rest of the weekend.

Head to Times Square at the north end for the walkable stretch of shops and restaurants, then get out on the Fort Myers Beach Pier for the sunset. It is the single best free thing to do on the island and it takes about twenty minutes.

Bayside Park at Old San Carlos and 1st Street often has live music on weekend evenings: Bayside Park Concert Series. Worth a swing through to see what is set up.

Saturday: the full beach day

Start early. Beach parking is a mid-morning problem, not an 8am problem.

Bowditch Point Park sits at the very north tip where the Gulf meets the pass. Calmer water, good shelling, shade under the Australian pines, and boat traffic to watch. Reachable by cart or bike with far less hassle than by car.

Lovers Key State Park is just south of the island at 8700 Estero Blvd. Two miles of beach, manatees and dolphins in the back bay, kayak rentals, and a genuinely good chance of seeing a bald eagle. Entry is per vehicle. Plan on half a day.

Mound House at 451 Connecticut Street is the oldest standing structure on the island, built over a 2,000-year-old Calusa shell mound. Air conditioned, historical, and about an hour. This is your rain plan or your midday heat plan.

Getting everyone onto the sand

Soft sand is the reason a lot of people skip the beach entirely. Standard wheelchairs sink. Walkers are useless in it. And hauling a cooler, four chairs, an umbrella and a bag of toys across a hundred yards of loose sand takes three trips and ruins the first hour.

Two rentals solve that, and both matter more on a holiday weekend when the whole family is out.

Beach wheelchairs. Wide balloon tires ride on top of soft sand instead of digging into it, so a rider can get down near the waterline and sit where everyone else is sitting. If you have a parent or grandparent who has been waiting back at the condo while everyone else goes to the beach, this is the rental that changes their weekend.

The e-Beach Wagon. Electric, 350 pound capacity, and it does the pulling instead of you. One trip from the parking lot with the cooler, chairs, umbrella and gear loaded in. Once you pick a spot it converts to a bench, a table, or a flatbed, so it keeps working after the hauling is done.

Sunday: shelling in the morning, beach bars in the afternoon

Start with low tide. Walk the wrack line at the north end and September usually rewards you, since it is a quiet month for beachcombing and the good finds are still sitting there.

Then spend the afternoon working your way down the island.

Sandy Bottoms Beach Bar is the anchor stop. Right on the sand, feet-in-the-sand seating, and one of the few places you can park a golf cart, walk twenty feet, and be at a table with the Gulf in front of you.

From there the island opens up. Nervous Nellie’s and Ugly’s upstairs for live music, Doc Ford’s for the Yucatan shrimp, Fresh Catch Bistro on the back bay if you want sunset without the Times Square crowd. All within a few miles of each other on one road.

This is the day to leave the car parked. Estero Boulevard is a single road, parking is metered and scarce, and moving a car between three stops on a holiday Sunday is the least fun thing you can do with an afternoon. A golf cart parks where a car cannot and gets four to six people between stops in minutes.

• Dolphin and sunset cruises leave from Salty Sam’s and the Snug Harbor area off Old San Carlos
• Kayak or paddleboard the back bay at Lovers Key, calmer and shadier than the Gulf side

Most rentals run on 24-hour cycles, so a Monday morning ride to breakfast before checkout is usually free time you already paid for. Grab coffee, do one last loop, then drop everything on your way off the island.

What is the weather like on Fort Myers Beach in September?

Hot, humid, and prone to a short afternoon storm. Highs run around 91°F with lows near 77°F. Gulf water sits around 86 to 88°F, which is the warmest it gets all year.

Most days follow the same pattern: clear morning, thunderstorm somewhere between 2 and 5pm, clear evening. It usually passes in under an hour. Plan the beach for the morning and the indoor stuff for the afternoon and you will barely notice.

September is also peak hurricane season. Watch the forecast in the week leading up and check the cancellation terms on anything you book.
